We Turned the Tables

Tablescape by  Amal Kapen Interiors

A backdrop of whimsy and color greeted our 2016 Spring Luncheon attendees, as they witnessed the wonderful “tablescapes” of 14 talented Interior Designers, who showcased their image of spring. As guest shopped at favorites vendor stalls and enjoyed lunch with friends, they were reminded of the Luncheon's one goal: to send at-risk children to camp.

Proceeds from the lunch will be used to fund the JWL’s Camp for Kids Program, an annual program that sends children from difficult domestic environments to summer camp. Camp for Kids, established in 2002, has sent more than 650 at-risk children to camp.

Acts of Kindness

A record 514 at-risk children and teens in the Town of Huntington were sponsored with gifts and joy through our Holiday Charities Program! Our outreach to local families was met with an outpouring of support during late November and early December. The wish lists of all the children referred to us were fulfilled and the gifts were acknowledged by their families as acts of kindness and messages of hope.

We thank all of our supporters, partner organizations and volunteers for their generosity and belief in our Holiday CharitieProgram.  Because of you, warm clothing, new toys and basic household goods were provided to the youngest members of our community during this holiday season.

Hearts Were Lifted

The Junior Welfare League of Huntington was very pleased to honor, Alice Marie & Jerry Rorke, longtime Huntington residents at our Lift Up Your Hearts fall fundraiser. The Rorke's are dedicated
volunteers and generous philanthropists, supporting countless causes, which help the underserved and less fortunate of our community. Alice Marie is a past president of the JWL, and has spearheaded many key initiatives of the organization during her nearly 20- year membership.

Together, Alice Marie and Jerry represent community-mindedness at its best.  Recognized for their passion, commitment and generosity, above all, our honorees give from their hearts.

Backing Up Kids

Did you know that for less than a night at the movies, you may send a child to school with a new backpack filled with fresh supplies?

Statistics show that children who go to school prepared for class and possessing a positive attitude have a far better chance of succeeding. This is where the Backpacks for Success steps in and provides local in need students with fresh supplies, a new backpack and a confident smile. This year our goal is 175 backpacks for 175 kids.  Our Spring  Luncheon and Boutique was a true success.

Attendees shopped at the various vendors tables, shared
a delicious lunch catching up with old friends
and making
new acquaintances- and most important– they enjoyed an
afternoon celebrating the achievements of the JWL.

It was our strongest attendance in over five years; a wonderfully profitable event that will provide many weeks of camp participation to local children through the League’s Camp for Kids Program.

Legislator William Spencer presented the League with a $5,000 check during the Spring Luncheon.  His support and the generosity of the Suffolk County Legislative Office will enable the JWL to cast a wider net within Huntington. Thanks Doc!

Also partaking in this celebration was our Healthcare and Youth in Philanthropy award recipients Rajvinder Dogra and Emily Kenney, who sprinkled our event with their humility, drive and accomplishments. Overall it was a great day to celebrate achievement in Huntington.
It was all smiles as Legislator Spencer presented
      the League President,
Gloria Palacios with a
                      generous contribution.

 Thank You!

The Charitable Children Fund at Work

Since the establishment of the fund back in September 2014, the Charitable Children Fund (CCF) has positively impacted the lives of six children and their families by provided immediate small-scale funds in their times of need.   Here are their stories to share:

An eighteen-year old student diagnosed with Lupus requested $45 for bus and train fare to a specialist’s office in Nassau County.  Local social agencies could not offer him cost of transportation for this important visit; the CCF swooped in and immediately took care of this request.

Four siblings, ranging from 8- to 15-years old, needed basic clothing supplies. Both of their parents worked until mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. The CCF provided these siblings with $400 worth of gift cards.

A young boy and his dad lost everything in an apartment fire. Thanks to the generosity of their community, they received much needed second hand clothing and furniture. While dad didn’t mind sleeping on an air mattress after the fire, he wished for a bed and mattress for his son. Something new. Within two days, thanks to the CCF, this young boy was sleeping in his brand new bed.

These are just the first of what we hope will be many future upbeat narratives from this unique program.
